Annual Student Climate Survey

Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUnified) administers the California Health Kids Survey (CHKS) to assess school climate and related factors, which informs annual planning cycles to support student safety, health and wellness, and connectedness to school, among many other factors. The aggregate results inform the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), School Plans for Student Achievement (SPSA), and local indicators for the California School Dashboard, the state’s new accountability platform.

In Fall 2019, SBUnified will administer the survey to students grades 5 through 12 with parental consent, and is completely anonymous. Students in grades 5 and 6 will take the Elementary Core module; students in grades 7 and 8 will take the Middle School Core module and the Closing The Achievement Gap module; students in grades 9 through 12 will take the High School Core module and the Closing The Achievement Gap module; students in grades 7-12 will also receive three custom questions (four for Alta Vista Alternative programs to determine program participation), also linked below.
